FAQ

What is a Solar Rooftop System?

In a solar rooftop system, the solar panels are installed in the roof of any residential, commercial, institutional and industrial buildings. This can be of two types (i) Solar Rooftop System with storage facility using battery, and (ii) Grid Connected Solar Rooftop System. In which The grid connected system is more preferable for Residential and commercial.

What is a Grid Connected Solar Rooftop System?

In grid connected rooftop or small SPV system, the DC power generated from SPV panel is converted to AC power using power conditioning unit and is fed to the grid either of 33 kV/11 kV three phase lines or of 440/220 Volt three/single phase line depending on the capacity of the system installed at institution/commercial establishment or residential complex and the regulatory framework specified for respective States. These systems generate power during the day time which is utilized fully by powering captive loads and feed excess power to the grid as long as grid is available. In case, where solar power is not sufficient due to cloud cover etc., the captive loads are served by drawing power from the grid.

Where such plants can be installed?

Such rooftop systems can be installed at the roofs of residential and commercial complex, housing societies, community centers, government organizations, private institutions etc.

How much space do we need?

Thumb rule is 100 sq.ft. per KW of shade free area

Will the solar rooftop system work in case of grid power failure?

No Solar rooftop system Won't work in case of grid power failure. Solar rooftop system needs reference voltage from anywhere for its operation. Inverter has a Inbuilt function called Anti-Islanding which prevents the power to flow in the grid for safety of maintenance technician which is working on Grid in case of failure.

What are the advantages of Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar System?

  • Electricity generation at the consumption center and hence Savings in transmission and distribution losses.
  • No requirement of additional land.
  • Improvement of tail-end grid voltages and reduction in system congestion with higher.
  • self-consumption of solar electricity Local employment generation.

What is the potential available in India?

According to a study conducted by TERI, a potential of 124 GWp SPV Rooftop plants has been estimated in the country. This can be achieved through active supports from the States.

How Net metering works?

You can install a rooftop solar system and consume the energy generated, however, if you are not consuming the entire energy, the excess units can be exported back to your utility. This process is called net metering – Your monthly electricity bill will reflect that “net” units you consume i.e. what you import or buy from the utility less what you export or sell
As an example:

  • Say you import 500 units and export 400 units – you monthly bill will be for 100 units.
  • Say you import 400 units and export 500 units – you will be credited for 100 units which will be carried over to the following month.
The advantage of net metering is that you don’t need a battery to store energy as any excess solar power is exported back to the electricity utility for a later consumption

What is the present status about sanctions under the grid connected rooftop solar programme?

As on 31.07.2017, the cumulative Solar Energy capacity installed, is 13652 MW while the same at the end of 2014-15 was 3743.97 MW.

What is the average cost of the solar rooftop system?

According to Ministry of New and Renewable Energy the average benchmark cost for solar rooftop system from 1 KW is Rs 69000. The Central government(MNRE) provides 30 % subsidy on total cost and Stated Nodal Agencies(GEDA) also provides subsidy from Rs. 10000 /- to maximum Rs 20000 /-, So After Subsidy cost for 1 KW system is RS 38,300.(Only for Residential Consumers in Gujarat).

Is there any subsidy for Commercial Sector?

Subsidy can only be availed by certain profiles such as residential consumers, agricultural consumers, schools, institutions etc. You can avail the benefits of claiming accelerated depreciation if you have an industry, factory shed or a commercial complex. In certain cases, availing AD is more beneficial than subsidies.

How much maintenance required in Solar Rooftop System?

Solar rooftop system does not need any maintenance over period of time, It only need cleaning on surface of solar panels in the interval of some days, Also we provide 25 yrs of output warranty on solar panels and 5 years of opertaion and maintenance warranty of the whole system.

How much carbon emission reduced by solar rooftop system?

Typically, 1 kW of solar rooftop system can reduce a carbon emission of up to 1 tonne to 1.4 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide per year depending on the location.

What happens when it’s rainy, cloudy?

  • Your solar energy system will work at low efficiency (compared to clear sunny day) on a rainy, cloudy day.
  • In our calculations, we consider roughly 40-45 rainy / foggy days in India, and hence we assume 320 sunny days for our payback calculations.

Is this the same as solar water heater?

  • No, solar water heater uses Sun’s energy to heat water. Solar PV (Photovoltaic) or solar energy is the generation of electricity using sunlight.
  • These are two very different concepts but both using the same source – the Sun.

What happens if there is a power cut? I already have an inverter at home.

  • A electricity utility connected net metering system does not work when there is a power cut and that is because the electricity utility provides a reference voltage for your solar power system. During a power cut, the reference voltage drops hence solar power system shuts off.
  • You have the option of going with a hybrid system (with batteries) to provide the reference voltage during a power cut but such a system costs 30 – 40% higher and requires regular maintenance of the batteries.
  • Batteries will need to be replaced every 5 – 6 years.

I have a home loan; can I get a top-up for solar?

Yes, you can get a top-up, Heliopath will be happy to assist you with the paperwork.
